How much car can I afford?

A car budget calculator answers the question every responsible buyer should ask before walking onto a lot: what's the maximum monthly payment I can afford without wrecking my finances? The classic 20/4/10 rule says: at least 20% down, no more than a 4-year loan, and total transportation costs (payment + insurance + fuel + maintenance) under 10% of gross income. This calculator works backwards from those guardrails to give you a realistic price ceiling, not just the largest loan a dealer will approve you for.

How to use this car affordability calculator

Enter your monthly income, current debts, and how much you can put down. Pick a loan term and an interest rate from a recent quote. The calculator shows the maximum vehicle price that keeps you within healthy debt-to-income limits and the resulting monthly payment. Try shortening the loan from 72 to 48 months to see how dramatically the payment changes — longer loans make pricier cars feel affordable, but you pay thousands more in interest and stay underwater on the loan for years.

Don't forget the true cost of car ownership

The monthly loan payment is usually less than half the true cost of owning a car. Insurance, fuel, maintenance, repairs, registration, parking, and depreciation often add 50–100% on top of the payment itself. A $500/month car payment can easily mean $900–1,100/month in real outflow. Before committing to any car, get an insurance quote on the exact make and model, look up the typical maintenance schedule, and check fuel economy for your actual commute. Then compare that all-in number to your budget.
