What is a currency converter?

A currency converter turns an amount in one currency into the equivalent amount in another using the current or a custom exchange rate. It's the fastest way to sanity-check international prices, travel budgets, freelance invoices, and cross-border transfers. Online rates change every second based on the foreign exchange market — what your bank or payment processor actually charges may differ by 2–5% once their margin and fees are added in.

How to use this currency converter

Choose the currency you have (the source) and the currency you want (the target), enter the amount, and the calculator returns the converted value instantly. You can override the rate manually to model a specific bank quote, a forward contract, or the rate you saw on a particular day. For travel money, always compare the mid-market rate shown here against the rate offered by your bank, ATM, or card provider — the gap is your real cost.

Mid-market rate vs the rate you actually get

The number you see on Google or in a news headline is the mid-market rate — the midpoint between what banks buy and sell currency for. You almost never get this rate. Bank wires, credit cards, and airport bureaus add a markup of 1–4%, plus a fixed fee per transaction. Modern fintech apps (Wise, Revolut, OFX) typically come closest to mid-market. Use this calculator with the mid-market rate as your benchmark, then compare any quoted rate to see how much you're really paying in hidden FX fees.
